Opportunities From: Nevada Department of Wildlife

Volunteer: Herpetofauna Surveys: Road Cruising

Our road cruising volunteers will assist in the collection of data to improve our understanding of species' habitat associations. We are targeting snakes, but will take note of all reptiles and amphibians on the road, both alive (AOR) and dead (DOR). Survey123 will be utilized to record data. Any DOR specimen that can be safely collected should be brought to the NDOW office to be preserved.


Vehicles will drive 15-30 mph across the following roads after sunset:

1. NV 167 - Northshore road: Mile marker – 15 to 30
2. NV 165 - Nelson road: Mile marker – 2 to 17
3. NV 164 - Searchlight-Nipton road: Mile marker – 0 to 15
4. Cold Creek road: Mile marker – 3 to 13
5. NV 169 - Valley of Fire Highway: 10 to White Dome (via 169 to Mouse’s Tank)
6. Red Rock Canyon Scenic Loop: Pay station to exit gate (
